Contemporary Italy study abroad

This immersive study abroad program offers University of Melbourne students a unique opportunity to explore contemporary Italy through a blend of academic learning and hands-on cultural experiences. Set in the historic Castello Sonnino estate in the Tuscan countryside, the course combines lectures, site visits, and experiential activities to provide a deep understanding of Italian culture, food systems, sustainability, and heritage.

Throughout the program, students engage with faculty-led lectures alongside practical experiences such as Italian cooking classes using organic ingredients, guided tours of the historic castle, and firsthand exposure to sustainable agricultural and wine production. The course also includes excursions to culturally significant locations such as Lucca, San Gimignano, and Certaldo, as well as visits to biodynamic farms and contemporary art spaces.

Participants are hosted within the Castello Sonnino estate, where they experience daily life in a working farm and winery. The program emphasizes the connection between tradition and modernity in Italy, highlighting themes of sustainability, local production, and cultural identity. Shared meals, including a welcome and final dinner at the estate’s Enoteca, further enrich the experience by fostering community and cultural exchange.

This program is designed to provide students with both academic insight and meaningful cultural immersion, offering a comprehensive perspective on contemporary Italian life.
