INTRODUCTION TO GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE NOVEMBER TO DECEMBER 2018

Block 4: EV128 Introduction to Global Climate Change

Known for its ancient monuments, delectable cuisine, and world-class vineyards, Italy faces a unique set of challenges tied to modern-day climate change. In this variation on the popular on-campus “EV128: Introduction to Global Climate Change” course, we will discuss the fundamentals of Earth’s climate system as well as natural and anthropogenic drivers for climate change. Then we will explore first-hand the impacts of a changing climate on the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere of Italy. The course will be based in Tuscany but will include several regional excursions to gain these perspectives. We will visit a high-elevation monitoring station in the Appenine mountain range and study its long-term atmospheric carbon dioxide record. We will examine the threat of rising seas on the iconic city of Venice. And we will consider how a changing climate alters wine production in the Chianti region through shifting weather patterns and soil conditions. Through observations, mathematical models, statistical data analyses, and conversations with local experts we will begin to understand the past, present, and future climate of Italy.
